In hindsight, the first sign that this was a bad idea was when the cashier smiled at me and said, "No one has ever asked for just syrup." The two employees discussed the request, smiled at me and agreed they would provide one cup of pure lime syrup and one regular limeade for my daughter. The cashier took my payment and I moved forward to the second window.
Well, normally a drink order is fairly quick but it took the girl a few minutes to prepare my concoction. As she clarified that I would like a lime and ice her beaming smile made me feel comfortable that sour beverage enjoyment was soon to follow. My mouth was watering as I imagined Pavlov's Dogs.
After a few minutes passed the error of my judgement started to dawn on me. One sparkling cup of limeade with a pleasant hint of green at the bottom was passed out the window and immediately placed in Lisa's cup holder to await her arrival when I picked her up from school. The second drink was an unappealing shade of green you might expect if you extracted juice from an evergreen. I pulled off the drive-thru pad before I tasted it.
It was really awful! I immediately wanted to go back and order a soda to dilute the syrup. The flavor was actually not that bad, but the sickeningly sweet syrup was so thick and slimy that I knew if I drank the whole thing I would be having convulsions trying to keep it down.
The cashiers had been so friendly and genuinely wanted me to have a drink I would really thoroughly enjoy. I felt so bad because they had gone out of their way to give me exactly what I had asked for and there was no way I was going to drink it. On the bright side, I have enough syrup to make myself about a dozen limeades if I just add sprite at home. Actually, I tried it with Coca-Cola and it's pretty good.
