John 1:1-5

In the beginning the Word already existed. He was with God, and he was God. He was in the beginning with God. He created everything there is. Nothing exists that he didn't make. Life itself was in him, and this life gives light to everyone. The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.

In the beginning... This is when God Created the heavens and the earth. The Word already existed before this. The Word is refered to as He which implies the Word is a man. This man was with God, This man was God. He was with God in the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth. He is the creator of everything. He was alive and had what makes other people live. With this life comes light which will never expire

Word (Greek - Logos)
A Greek philosopher named Heraclitus first used the term Logos around 600 B.C. to designate the divine reason or plan which coordinates a changing universe. This word was well suited to John's purpose in John 1.Thayer and Smith. "Greek Lexicon entry for Logos". "The New Testament Greek Lexicon".

Jesus Christ is the Word. Everyone who has the life Jesus offers has the light which that life gives. Those without life may see light, however those in darkness can not have life. The same with a light in a dark room. You can stand in a corner and see the light, but you are not actually in the light. Since all those with life have light, those in darkness can not possibly have life, and can not obtain life without obtaining light at the same time. Darkness then is death. The dead are in darkness, the darkness is an exclusion of light, light is given to those with life and life is Jesus Christ.
